Why Have An Ultrasound?
What is an ultrasound?
An ultrasound, also known as a sonogram, is a method used to see the inner parts of the body. An ultrasound uses sound waves that bounce back into images or sounds. An ultrasound can be used during pregnancy to see inside your uterus to visualize the baby.
How is an ultrasound performed?
Two common types of ultrasounds are performed at our center – abdominal and transvaginal. Depending on how far along you are in your pregnancy will determine which type will be used. An abdominal ultrasound is performed when the transducer (scanner) is pressed firmly against the abdomen and swept back and forth to get images. A transvaginal ultrasound is performed when a transducer (scanner) is inserted into the vagina with a protective cover and lubricant. It is very similar to a tampon. It does not hurt, but there may be some pressure. A transvaginal ultrasound can provide a more significant look at the baby during early pregnancy to get better images and measurements.
Why do you need an ultrasound?
At our center, there are three reasons we perform ultrasounds.
- To confirm the presence of an intrauterine pregnancy (making sure the baby is in your uterus and not somewhere they are not supposed to be).
- To check for fetal cardiac activity (heartbeat).
- To check for gestational age (how far along you are).
Why are ultrasounds necessary when considering an abortion?
It is crucial to have an ultrasound performed even if you are considering terminating your pregnancy using an abortion pill or a surgical abortion. First, you want to ensure a viable pregnancy and rule out the potential for miscarriage. Miscarriage is very common in the first trimester. Secondly, it is imperative to rule out a potential ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy outside of the uterus). An ectopic pregnancy is an emergency and can endanger your health. Thirdly, you need to know the correct age of your baby because it will be important in determining which kind of abortion procedure would be performed. Lastly, an ultrasound will help you know the whole truth and help you to make a more informed decision.
Our center offers FREE limited ultrasounds - determining an intrauterine pregnancy, measuring fetal cardiac activity, and measuring gestational age. We do not take the place of an OB-GYN, but this is still a beneficial step for women. If you are interested in a free ultrasound, call 601-469-1230 or visit foresthopeprc.org.
